An interview session with Dr. O.O. Oyewo about his recent achievement

Sequel to the recent Achievements of two senior lecturers in the Department of Public Administration, The polytechnic, Ibadan.; Dr O.O Oyewo and Dr T.O Adeyeye bags their PhD at the same time from different institutions.

NAPADS PRESS decided to meet Dr O.O Oyewo as regards his recent developments as a PhD holder.

NAPADS press; Doctor in academics congratulations sir, we want to know the connection between being a lecturer in the department and bagging your PhD at the same time, what is your focus, we all know to every coin there are two sides, favourable side, and the other side and he who laugh last laughs the best, we want to know your experience while going for your PhD sir?

Dr O.O Oyewo;  Thank you very much, it's the joy of everybody in academics to have the highest academic honour PhD so there is nothing special about a PhD, it is all about commitment and vision for all sacrifice anybody that is recruited into tertiary institutions as a lecturer has potential to have PhD because before you are recruited you must have the first degree which will qualify you for a master degree which you can easily use to proceed for PhD program.

My PhD journey started in 2014 at the University of Ibadan and I spent 6years on it, I don't see anything as negative on it when I started, the people in academics are thorough, which I can consider as a setback at every point in time could be something that also adds qualities in the work and I will forever appreciate lecturers from hands to other who took their time to contribute to whatever idea I have up to the time I have the honour as a PhD holder.

NAPADS press: Sir, you mentioned in one of your classes that you had your degree within two years we want to know more about it, and how do you see the institutions in Nigeria producing half-baked graduates every year and what can you proffer as a solution to this menace?.

Dr O.O Oyewo: what you mean by half-baked is a relative educational system that does not exist in isolation, the country Nigeria itself is facing challenges this is the way the higher institution also facing challenges. When we talk about the functionality of graduates one could argue that the causes are not functional, this is to reform the entire academic system.

"Spending two years in the University, that is not completely true" in my first degree I gained admission through direct entry I was supposed to spend 3 years and the school (university of Ilorin) was very faster in the academic calendar where I was supposed to spend 6 semesters and each semester is 3 month in 6 places gives 18 months which we can do it in two years even with a gap for the holiday we can still achieve it, so academic calendar does not mean one has to spend a whole year for a session. Polytechnic system can also improve where people that bought the form for ND are not supposed to purchase form for HND they should finish everything at once, half baked does not help anybody someone couldn't make it back to poly or another tertiary institution. So I want to assure you that the system can improve particularly the time they spend in school so students can graduate faster.

NAPADS press: we will like you to tell us what the word "THESIS" means not all students know the meaning.

Dr O.O Oyewo; Thesis mean the core of your work, the contribution to the academic, to bring out, I wrote on prison governance particularly on roles of infrastructure on inmate correctional service in Nigeria (Oyo state command), any system where learning is taking place does not require iron hand and there is a need for the improved facility, motivation to allow learning whether vocational training or normal academic training for those training to take place there must be motivation and the punishment, the harsh conditions of the prison is antithetical to issue of training which is one of the policies of the prison services.

So there is a need for the government to make the prison system a bit habitable so that there would be no psychological problem on the part of the people they were expecting to learn when they come out of the prison which is one of the policies of the prison services, this will equally help them come out of the prison as an improved human being so they won't become a hardened criminal.

NAPADS press; Sir, your general advice for a student who feels like school is a scam, students says repeatedly please enlighten us on this.

Dr O.O. Oyewo; if somebody says education is a scam you can not deny that person from responding to his environment because several people have gone to school and realised that they were unable to contribute to the progress of the society especially some of us went to school not because we want but to improve, to solve the question of economy of our life because parent sent you to school to bring back something, what they called "onje omo".

"Education is a scam", the content people use in education is a scam is an inability of the system to provide needs, good standard of living that should be associated to who have gone to school and get a job as senior staff in that you have come to school for 5-6 years you can't get a job you will join people to say education is a scam. The enlightenment is that your standard of living will change whether you use your certificate to secure a job or not , if you are educated.
