Anxiety and Depression; A Mar On students’ Academic Performance

Nowadays, anxiety and depression are common obstacles experienced by youths and it is beginning to take a serious toll on students of tertiary institutions. With so many student on campus who have undiagnosed anxiety or depression, this will surely affect their ability to learn and enjoy their time in school.
By anxiety, we mean a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe. Depression implies mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. When students have anxiety and depression that goes unnoticed, their mental health is at risk, which can lead to social and behavioral problems, neglected hygiene, and low self esteem. Anxiety and depression can be tricky because they can cause students to act in unpredictable ways and lecturer aren’t trained to recognize these cues, they rather perceive you to be an unserious type.
Students who have these disorders are at risk of suffering from poor academic performance and resistance to anything relating to academics. This can include lack of engagement in the lecture room, poor relationships with peers and lecturers, and disinterest in pursuing passions and plans for the future. Their learning is also affected due to the fact that anxiety and depression can influence the functioning of their medulla oblongata, which makes it challenging for victims to retain new information and recall previously acquired knowledge.
Anxiety and depression negatively influence academic progress and encourage under-achievement. Students with a high level of anxiety score lower and would not even be aware of that. When students are depressed, they are more likely to be disengage in the classroom. This can cause them to participate in behaviors that will allow them to avoid productive events and situations.
Dealing with undiagnosed state of mind can result in victims feeling like they are constantly missing out on opportunities and this can lead to substance abuse, further mental health problems and even suicide, which would serve as solutions to their problems in their initial thoughts. That’s why you need to check on that your friend that has been behaving unusual lately. You might think he is supposed to open up to you, trust me, his mental state would not allow him, try your possible best in assisting out of the situation before it is too late.
