ASSU strike; its impact on the Nigerian students

The Academic Staff Union of University [ASUU] initially embarked on this strike on 14th of February, 2022, asking the government to sign the agreement it entered with the union in 2009. As at July 19, 2022 the Minister for Education, Mr. Adamu Adamu, took over the negotiations and also gave assurance that all universities on strike will resume as soon as possible but It was reported that on August 16, 2022, ASUU and the Federal Government re-negotiated their outstanding issues. ASUU President Professor Emmanuel Osodeke stated after the meeting that schools will reopen soon, but a couple of days later he reported the federal government failed to sign the agreement they reached.

Moreover, the federal government introduced the rule  'No work no pay' and ASUU in reaction, extended its strike indefinitely on 29th of August, 2022  and it so sad that the strike is still on till date. As a matter fact, positively or negatively, this has a great impact on Nigerian student, all the same, none of the student wish for this but have to accept the state of our dear country, of course the federal government just chose this lackadaisical attitude towards education in the nation. the association decided not to get back to work except the federal government implement their demand.

In an interview with some affected students, one Azeez Toheeb a student (500L) of computer engineering department, Obafemi Awolowo University

reveal that the strike has been giving him a wonderful experience. For him, the strike gives him the chance to harness his time in one or two things perfectly, he claims he is a fashion designer, and the strike opened room for him to explore more. Also in his course of study, he included that his uncle is a proprietor of a school  and the strike gave him the opportunity to test his ability of teaching. Nevertheless, it is indisputable that the strike has an adverse effect on him. "I should finish with my education this year, but the situation on ground will delay me till next year."

More so, Oluwaseun from  LAUTECH who is studying electrical engineering (300Level) said in an interaction with him, the strike has both positive and negative impact on me. "I have always wanted to learn the practical aspect of my discipline but there seems to be no chance due to school activities but I am able utilize this period of strike to achieve that." Although I am still learning I thank God I understand my course better even with the practical aspect of my course." "The negative effect is very funny that I can't even remember my matric number not to talk of everything i was thought in class, but I believe that once the strike is called off and we resume everything will be back to normal."

With these, we see the disagreement between ASUU and the Federal Government with different impact on students. Waste of precious time is one the deteriorate disadvantage of this strike. Albeit, it is certain that some students will never see this as an opportunity to explore more on other formidable things. They have devote their time on fantasies, so many ladies got pregnant in the process, thereby terminating their educational life and career.
