Learning to know; a prerequisite for becoming a better student

By: V.bass

As portrayed by the protesters, examination is not a true test of knowledge. Nevertheless, it is imperative that nearly all students are prone to having the pressure of the need to have an excellent performance. Pressure which  often comes from the factors that matters most to us. You may be pushed by your dream career or parent screaming down your neck.

In higher institutions of today however, some students are not been moved to study even during exams. Some students comes to school for coming sake, some because their friends are as well in school and some come to school just because they want to wear the NYSC uniform, so to those categories of students, education (studying) can even be more stressful. Even among the serious ones, the struggle with long calculations and trying to convince themselves that they enjoy it.

However, on a more neutral ground, some only study to get good grades that could also earn them a good salary at the end of their educational journey. There is nothing wrong with doing this, but the tendency to get dissociated from the pleasure that comes with learning to understand remains sacrosanct.

Many found themselves in this position. They burnt several candles to study, all with the motive of getting a career in engineering for instance. Funny enough, they found out that they are not even compatible with the course. The amount of hardship they put themselves through did nothing for their learning experience but made them to remain the same without any value being added to them personally, psychologically, socially and of course educationally.

As a student studying for your next big examination or an adult going through the journey of learning. Commit your best to your academics,  by that you should: schedule enough time to revise, become very organized for each lessons and more importantly choose to socialize less. By so doing, the possibility for many straight-A(s). But many students restrict themselves in this way, and that result them to perform less.

It will always feel good to get the grade or reward you desire. However, the question how you get it is also important, did you work for it? Do you actually deserve it or more? Well the need to try and  device a balance with your emotion, because that is why it’s an examination.

Thinking that you wrote a lot is not the point (particularly for social science courses), did you actually get what the examiner is demanding of you?if not, try and adjust in the case of the coming examination. You also have to examine your teachers in a tertiary institution before you get examined. You don’t have to destroy the joy of learning. Read not to pass alone, but for the sake of the knowledge as well.

Due to the habit of reading to pass, some graduates have always been unable to defend (during interviews) their excellent certificates because they only read to pass. Imagine the level of shame such will bring, when someone that has first class or distinction in a polytechnic or university degree could not explore and express himself in the discussion of the course he studied for four years. Therefore, learning to know is very germane, not for academic purpose alone but as well other inevitable sphere of life.
