Dortmund or Bayern: Who Wins it?

 By: Adeniji Sodiq Ademola

The 2022/2023 Bundesliga season has been one of the most exciting and intense in recent memory, with the title chase between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich captivating fans across the globe. As the season comes to a close, the two teams remain neck and neck in the race for the championship, with only a game left to play and Dortmund sitting outrightly at the top of log with 70 points while Bayern Munich trailed with 68 points.

At the start of the season, many experts predicted that Bayern Munich would once again dominate the Bundesliga, as they have done for much of the past decade. However, Borussia Dortmund had other ideas, and they hit the ground running from the very first game of the season. Led by their talismanic midfield Maestro, Marco Reus and the exciting young star, Jude Bellingham, Dortmund played some scintillating football, scoring goals for fun and winning game after game.

But Bayern Munich are not a team to be underestimated, and they soon recovered from a shaky start to the season. Led by their veteran manager, Jullian Nagelsman, and with a star-studded squad that includes the likes of Leroy Sane, Thomas Muller, Sadio Mane, Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich, Bayern began to rack up the wins and put pressure on Dortmund at the top of the table.

As the season progressed, the two teams traded blows, with neither able to gain a decisive advantage over the other. Dortmund's attacking prowess was matched by Bayern's solid defense, and as the season moved into its final stages, it remained impossible to predict which team would come out on top.

As fate would have it, Bayern Munich part ways with their head coach, Julian Nagelsman, and appointed the UEFA Champions League winning coach, Thomas Tuchel as his replacement. Of course, it did have an effect on the team's game performance. They crashed out of the DFB Pokal, UEFA Champions League and as well lost valuable points in the title race.

One of the defining moments of the season came in early April, when Dortmund and Bayern faced off in a tense and dramatic encounter at the Allianz Arena. With both teams desperate for the three points, the match was a classic, with end-to-end action and plenty of drama. In the end, it was Bayern Munich who emerged victorious, with Mullet scoring twice to secure a 4-2 win and send the home fans into raptures.

That match proved to be a turning point in the title race, as Dortmund went on to win their next few games while Bayern Munich slipped up through various draws and a couple of loses which made Dortmund closed up the points at the top of the table. However, Bayern refused to give up, and as they found back the momentum to win their own games and keep the pressure on Dortmund.

As we approach the final game of the season, the tension is palpable. Every win, every goal, and every point is crucial, and both teams know that they cannot afford to slip up. The title race between Dortmund and Bayern has been fierce and thrilling, and it is a testament to the quality of both teams that the outcome is still uncertain with just a game left to play.

Whatever happens in the end, one thing is for sure: the 2022/2023 Bundesliga season will go down in history as one of the most exciting and closely contested in recent memory, and the fierce title chase between Dortmund and Bayern Munich will be remembered for years to come.

As we look forward to the last game of the season, I'd like you to imagine this scenario with me…

Minute 85: Bayern is winning in Köln and Dortmund are tied 0-0 with Mainz. As things stands, Bayern will win the league on goal difference.

Minute 87: Everyone in the Signal Iduna Park is on their nerves as they are realizing the league title hopes are fading away.

Minute 89: Marco Reus feels the pressure on him like never before. He rewinds all the struggles he went through throughout his football career. He gets the ball, realizes he has to step up for a “now or never” moment and strikes the ball from distance. Few seconds later, the whole stadium shakes as Dortmund go up 1-0. The whole team then goes back to defend as one unit to protect the lead and fight for the very much needed win.

Few minutes later, te referee blows the final whistle and the rest is history in the making.

Will we witness something similar to such a perfect scenario? For now all we can do is wait to see what May 27th hides for us.
