NAPADS ORIENTATION: EDUCATION IS NOT A SCAM, SAYS DR. MUYIWA OJO

The National Association of Public Administration students (NAPADS) today, the 18 January organized an all encompassing and educative orientation program for fresh students of the department, at the Sewage Hall 1, North Campus, The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
The program which started by 10am was moderated by Akinade Ridwan and Oluwagbemiga Faith.
Mrs Olayinka Oke opened the event with prayers and following this was the recitation of National Anthem, Oyo State anthem and The Polytechnic, Ibadan Anthem by everyone present at the event.
Mr Y. B Wahab, one of the lecturers in the department was saddled with the responsibility of introducing the Head of department and invited special guests present at the event. After which he invited the HOD for his opening remarks.
While delivering his opening remarks, the Head of department, Dr. O.O. Oyewo indulged all students to regard the program well, stating that the purpose of the programme is to pilot students affairs on campus. The HOD advices students to pay keen attention, bring out their writing materials and jolt them necessary discuss from the programme.
Following this was the President's address, Com. Mufutau Ridwan Akinkunmi, where he spoke of his delight for being given the opportunity to serve as the President for the academic year. He urged students to make the best out of their stay in school so as to attain their full potential. Immediately after his speech, the President introduced the NAPADS executives to the students.
The first Guest Speaker, Mr Moradeyo Kehinde from CIDM enlightened the students concerning the issues of student registration and computation of result. He described registration as a systematic process that reserved seats in a particular class for eligible students. He then went ahead to explain the process of registration, acceptance fee, E-clearance, school fee payment and others.
Another Guest Lecturer, Dr Muyiwa Ojo, a Senior Lecturer from the Department of Language Arts at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, talked about the topic “Is education really a scam?” He explained that scam is a fraudulent skill of not fulfilling one’s promises, therefore, education is not a scam, you should only check yourself and ask why you've not acquired any value. He also explained that education is a cumulative process of acquiring intellectual skills.
He further stated some process of education as having intellectual skills, developing skills and improvement in attitude. Education rearrange the ways man comport himself in society. It is an essential process in man's development. It should spark a culture of enquiry in the individual and it must be what you desire to know.
The value of education should be evaluated by its contribution to life. An educated person is responsible to solve all the problems surrounding the society. Your education must provoke critical thinking and focus on the future and not today alone, he concluded.
The Dean, Student Affairs, Mr Makinde John, who was also present at the event, shed light on issues and questions that have been lingering in the heart of students as regards hostel refusal. The DSA stated that the hostel refusal has been placed at the amount of N10,000 after much persuasions and deliberation between the management and the Faculty Presidents. However, the Dean also confirmed that the first semester examination will commence by the 29th of January, 2023 and that fresh students will get matriculated before the end of next week.
The HOD of Criminology and Security Studies department, Barr. Adebisi Shittu talked about “ law and orderliness on campus “. There are laws that are to abide by on campus and there are penalties for anyone that violates those laws on campus. The issues of cultism, indecent dressing , exam malpractice, drug abuse, rape and student molestation have there penalties. He indulged students not to take part in such actions.
Also, Mrs Fawibe who represented the Chief Security Officer of the Institution as she also discussed security rules and regulations on campus about security issues on campus. She shared with students the dos and don'ts of the institution and encouraged them to be of good behaviour.
The closing remark was said by Mr Ganiyu, and Mrs Olaniru observed the closing prayer. The event also featured musical performances, spoken word presentation, questions and answers amongst others.
